Can antiqued mirror glass be tempered (toughened)?
Yes it’s possible to temper/toughen the antiqued mirror. Toughening is recommended if the glass is going to be close to a heat source or has lots of cut outs which causes weakness to the glass. The glass is cut and polished and then heat treated to around 400˚ before it is then silvered and antiqued. Toughening can cause a rippling effect across the surface of the glass but if antiqued it’s incredibly difficult to notice. Please note there are a couple of styles of antiqued mirror that we cannot toughen.
What’s the maximum size?
The sizes vary from style to style and it’s also important to check access to your property or site. Mirrors do not bend around corners! Tolerances are around +2/-2mm so something to think about if you prefer a smaller composite paneling layout.
How are the mirrors fixed?
A standard mirror bond is recommended. Silicon fixings can erode into the back of the mirror. The panels are foil backed for added protection.
Can the antiqued mirror be cut on site?
Specialist glass cutting equipment is used to cut and polish. If cut once complete, the silvering/distressing can lift from the edges of the glass causing damage to the overall effect. In the event of this happening Hearts of Glass will not be held responsible for the damaged panel.
Do you do commissions and branding behind mirrors?
We collaborate with glass artists who are happy to work with you to create the design of your choice. The mirrors can be bonded in the same way as simple antiqued mirrors, or hung in a similar way to pictures if so preferred. Standard mirror fixings are available at any DIY store or more specialist fixings are available online.
What are the lead times?
It ranges, depending on styles, toughening and cut outs. 1-2 weeks to 3-4 weeks is usual from site survey drawings received.
